Enter the vehicle's number plate (registration number) and view the complete MOT history of any vehicle. For each MOT test, you will be able to see:
- Mileage recorded at MOT tests
- MOT passed or failed
- MOT details, defects or advisory notes
When is my MOT due?
You can also check when the next MOT is due and check all MOT defects. Reviewing the MOT history provides a clear overview of a vehicle’s condition and how it has been maintained over time. We keep an MOT score so you can clearly see the current status of the vehicle.
Extra MOT data
This is the most comprehensive MOT history available online. It includes all recorded MOT failures, recalls, and mileage readings. In addition, you can also access information about reported damage and, maintenance history of the car.
MOT history for cars, vans, motorcycles, buses, and coaches in the UK. Enter the registration number and press 'Check MOT history'.
Expired MOT?
My MOT is expired, am I allowed to drive? No, it is illegal to drive a vehicle on the public road if the MOT has expired. Once the MOT certificate is no longer valid, the vehicle is officially not roadworthy.
There are only two exceptions. You may drive the vehicle: Directly to a garage for a pre-booked MOT test, or directly to a garage for repairs required to pass the MOT.
If you are caught driving with an expired MOT, you can be fined up to £1,000. If the vehicle is also found to be unsafe, you may face further penalties, such as points on your licence or a higher fine.
Check MOT historyWhat does it mean?
During every MOT test, all faults are recorded. You can view all recordings by the registration number. Check the MOT history free.
An MOT test can have different outcomes, depending on the condition of the vehicle. These include advice, minor, major and dangerous. Each MOT fault is displayed with its own colour:
Green: Advice MOT
Grey: Minor MOT fault
Orange: Major MOT fault
Red: Dangerous MOT fault
The colours and terms refer to the level of seriousness of the issue.
Advice
An advisory note highlights an issue that can be considered, but it is not something that requires immediate attention.
Minor
Minor points out issues identified during the MOT test that should be addressed soon, but which are not considered an immediate safety risk. For example, a tyre that shows signs of wear and will need replacing soon, but which still meets the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm.
Major
Major MOT faults identify significant problems with the vehicle that must be repaired without delay. If one or more major faults are found, the vehicle will fail its MOT and a certificate will not be issued. An example of this would be a windscreen wiper blade that is not securely fitted.
Dangerous
Dangerous MOT faults identify issues which cause an immediate safety concern. A vehicle with one or more dangerous defects should not be driven until these are repaired. For example, a vehicle with worn brake pads.
Mileage registrations?
During every MOT test, the vehicle's mileage is recorded. These records are available to view online, allowing you to track how much the vehicle has been used over time.
By reviewing these mileage readings, you can identify patterns of regular use and spot any unusual changes that may indicate discrepancies.
Check service history
For a more complete understanding of the vehicle's condition, it is also possible to access the dealer's maintenance history. The service history shows what work has been carried out on the vehicle and when, giving a clear picture of how well it has been maintained.
In many cases, additional mileage readings are recorded at each service, which can be used to cross-check the MOT mileage and verify that the vehicle's odometer readings are accurate.
By combining MOT and service data, you gain a detailed insight into the vehicle's past use and overall condition, helping you make an informed decision whether you are buying, selling, or simply monitoring a car.
What is checked during an MOT?
During an MOT test, a vehicle's key internal and external components are carefully examined to ensure it is safe and roadworthy. The inspection covers a range of systems, including:
- Engine
- Clutch
- Gearbox
- Seatbelts
